We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who played at The Forum on Sunday, and of course the parents, families and friends who came to support us. Children from Avenues Junior, Browick Road Primary, Eaton Primary, Hethersett Woodside Infants, Hempnall Primary, Little Melton Primary, Mulbarton Infant and Junior and Recreation Road Infants played to a very enthusiastic crowd. After some duets and small group ensembles more than 60 young uke players wowed Christmas shoppers with a massive flashmob rendition of Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer. Well done to all our players - it was wonderful to see chldren from our schools across Norwich and Norfolk playing together. Thank you to our volunteers who helped on the day. Together we helped raise £275 for The Big C, the charity which suppports people in Norfolk who are affected by cancer. Good work! Photos: Sue Tebble, Jon Wright, Ellie Wright, Bobbie Lloyd

Sunday December 4th 1-2pm Millennium Plain (Outside the Forum), Norwich The Big C have asked ILOVEUKE if we would like to entertain the public with our ukulele students on Sunday 4th December. We thought it was a great opportunity to show off what we have been learning this term to you, the public and also each other, whilst helping to raise some money for charity at the same time. Clara and Gemma have been working with each school group on a song or two to perform on the day. The plan is to have a few smaller group performances, and then have everyone play all together at the same time at the end. Sounds like chaos, you're right!! So that the children can practice at home, Gemma has made a tutorial for the 'Finale' for your child to practice along to at home. The song is Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, and you can find the video on the bottom of this blog. They won't need music for this. All your child should need to bring is their ukulele. We will endeavour to tune all the ukes before we play. Who knows what the weather will be like, so please dress your child accordingly. Playing in gloves is almost impossible, but if they have fingerless gloves, it could be a good time to use them. Christmas inspired clothes are welcome but feeling warm and comfortable is of most importance! Although we will try to provide some amplification, the ukes are very quiet instruments (especially when competing with outside noise), so we do ask that the audience is as quiet as possible, especially when the smaller groups are playing as it can be hard to hear them. Please turn up at 12.45 to give us time to tune all the ukes. A rough itinerary for the day is as follows (some performances may not go ahead if attendance is low for the smaller groups) Go Tell Aunt Nancy (duet - Amelie and Lois) Auld Lang Syne (duet - Amelie and Lois) Count on Me - Little Melton 8 days a week ( Georgia, Vicky, Gil & Ted) Strumming Ukulele (Rec Rd, Eaton 2pm group) We wish you a Merry Christmas (Avenues Tuesday, Eaton 1.30pm group) Silent Night (Avenues Tuesday, Eaton 1.30 group, Avenues Thursday) Ukulele for Christmas (Hempnall, Little Melton, Mulbarton Infant, Mulbarton Jnr, Woodside) Rudolf (everyone!) We ask that parents stay with the group throughout the session, unless agreed with us in advance. We look forward to seeing you there! Watch this space for pics from the day!!
Gemma talks about how she made the video for BOO!
The ILOVEUKE students at Recreation Road have been learning the uke with me for 6 weeks. So far they have learnt the chords,
C, Am and F. So I was thinking, "3 chords. That's enough for a song, right?!" But I fancied doing something original and new this term. So I thought we'd try a song for Halloween. I came up with the chords and asked the children to write some lyrics (I'm not so great at writing lyrics). Within a week, over the 3 groups, we came up with the song 'BOO!'. I recorded them singing and making scary noises on my iPhone and, with a little help on the strumming from my Tuesday Avenues Uke Group, pasted it all together. I then added some drums and some sound effects in Garageband, and I'm pretty happy with the result. Even better, I realised that while being recorded in their Halloween gear at home, they are actually getting a bit of practice in too. Sneaky! (Insert evil laugh here) Thanks to all the parents that helped with the clips, I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it. Don't have nightmares....

Tuesday 24 January 2017 6-8pm The Garage, 14 Chapelfield North, Norwich NR2 1NY Cost: £5 for refreshments Booking: 01603 283382 Info: [email protected] Calling ukulele tutors in Norfolk – this event is for you! ILOVEUKE has teamed up with The Garage to offer a 2-hour training/networking evening for ukulele tutors. Get involved for some repertoire exchange, warm up ideas and tips for working with groups. You can tell us what else you’d like us to cover by completing this quick survey. The evening is funded by Youth Music, so it’s primarily aimed at tutors who work with children and young people, but if you work with adults you’re welcome too. The session will be facilitated by Ian Brownlie, a uke player and community musician with a wealth of experience in working with children and adults. The ukulele is becoming increasing popular in schools and we’re getting lots of enquiries from all over Norfolk - so we’re exploring whether it’s a good idea to set up an informal Uke Tutors’ Network for practitioners in Norfolk. The aim of the network would be to keep each other informed of training and work opportunities, or potentially work together on projects. If you’d like to be involved or would like to share your views on what the network might look like please can you complete this short online survey. ILOVEUKE are running our first training event for Norfolk ukulele tutors at The Garage in Norwich on January 24th 2017.
